You have come to Nottingham with your Goods on market day, and the only thing standing between you and your hard-earned profits is the Sheriff. All you need to do is bluff or bribe your way past him. ..or maybe, tell the truth!
As a merchant, your goal is to convince the Sheriff to let you in – by any means necessary! At the end of the game, the merchant with the most wealth wins! Will you be a sly cheese merchant? Perhaps the luxurious silk dealer? The choice is yours!
Are you going to play it safe and bring in common commodities? Apples, bread, cheese, and chickens will bring a bit o’ coin, or are you willing to chance bringing in some contraband? I hear that Will, the new Innkeeper is looking for a crossbow… and the Friar always pays well for mead.
Load your Merchant Bag: After deciding upon the goods that you would like to take to market, place them into your bag, and snap it closed. Next, you will declare what is in your bag to the Sheriff!
You must declare the correct number of goods you placed into the bag, along with one kind of legal good. What you actually have in your bag is up to you.
The Sheriff: Players take turns assuming the role of Sheriff throughout the game. When you are the Sheriff, you can inspect any number of merchant bags, or even decide not to inspect any bags!
Players are encouraged at this stage to make deals, bribe the Sheriff with a bit of coin, or play innocent. After the Sheriff has checked the Merchant’s bags, penalties are paid out and goods successfully brought into Nottingham are added to the Merchant’s stands to be counted as points at the end of the game!
